Five tips to protect your eyes from excessive use of mobile screens

In today's digital age, mobile device use has become ubiquitous. From checking emails to browsing social media and playing games, we spend countless hours in front of our phone screens. However, this habit can negatively impact our eye health if we don't take steps to protect it. Here are five tips to help you care for your eyes:

  1. Take regular breaks:

It's easy to lose track of time when you're engrossed in your mobile phone, which is why it's important to take frequent breaks to rest your eyes. The 20-20-20 rule can be helpful: every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and focus on something about 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and fatigue.

  1. Adjust the brightness and contrast:

Mobile screens are often set to excessively high brightness and contrast, which can be particularly tiring for the eyes, especially in low-light environments. Adjust your device's brightness and contrast settings to be comfortable for your eyes and avoid using your phone in complete darkness.

  1. Use blue light filters:

The blue light emitted by digital screens can interfere with your natural sleep cycle and cause eye strain. Consider using apps or settings on your phone that filter blue light, especially in the hours before bedtime. There are also lenses with blue light filters that you can use to protect your eyes during prolonged screen use, such as the BlueGuard coating integrated into all Zeiss lenses we carry at Escópica.

  1. Maintain a safe distance:

Holding your phone too close to your eyes can increase eye strain and cause discomfort. Keep your device at a comfortable distance, at least 30 to 40 cm from your eyes, and adjust the text and screen size so you don't have to strain your eyes.

  1. Blink frequently and keep your eyes hydrated:

When we're focused on a screen, we tend to blink less, and that can lead to dry eyes and irritation. Try to be mindful of blinking more often while using your phone, and consider using lubricating eye drops if you frequently experience dry eyes.
